今回は、エドワード・コーリー・バーン=ジョーンズの「愛と巡礼者」の絵画の感想です。
天使から導かれて、イバラからの道から離れようとしている巡礼者は、ちょっとまだ、戸惑っているようです。
なぜなら、片方の手は、イバラの枝をしっかりと握っています。苦しさから救われているようですが、手先をしっかり見ており、これは、本当なのか、まだ信じきれていないようで、天使も、その気配を感じています。
この絵画は、かなり大作で、157.5×304.8cm,1896-1897作成のものです。でも、色使いが地味で、あまり、興味を持つ人は少なかったです。
私は、このような絵画は、宗教画としては、とても人々を勇気づけになるような絵画だな、って思いました。
周りも、少しずつ明るくなっていくような気配が感じられる。このまま、信じて、この巡礼者は、ついていくんだろうか、ちょっと気になる絵画です。とても、巡礼者の心理がどう変化していくのか、この不思議な感覚に襲われている様子がよくわかります。
私は、この絵画を見て、思わず、芥川龍之介の「蜘蛛の糸」を思い出しました。地獄に落ちた罪人を救おうと、御釈迦様が蜘蛛の糸を垂らして、救おうとしたけれども、結局、救えなかった話です。この話は、日本では、有名です。そんな仏教の教えを知っているので、この絵画を見たときには、正直、驚きました。
だから、私は、この巡礼者が、本当に、救われるのか、初めは、疑問を持って鑑賞していました。けれども、周りの様子を見てみても、小鳥も飛び交っているのだし、本当に、この巡礼者は、救われそうだな、って感じました。
これから、太陽が上って明るく周りも変化していきそうな様子です。このような優しさあふれる絵画ですが、色使いは、決して、人々を魅力を感じるような色使いではありません。
だから、とても、見た目は、地味な絵画でした。
けれども、この絵画には、愛情が溢れているので、心安らぐ人は、多かったに違いないと、感じました。いろんなことで、苦しんでいる人にきっと救われる人は、多かったに違いない、って思うのです。
とても、作者の愛情を感じた作品でした。

I thought that paintings like this, as religious paintings, were very encouraging to people.

When I saw this painting, I was immediately reminded of Ryunosuke Akutagawa's ``The Spider's Thread.'' This is the story of the Buddha who tried to save a sinner who had fallen into hell by hanging a spider's thread, but in the end he was unable to save him. This story is famous in Japan. To be honest, I was surprised when I saw this painting because I know such Buddhist teachings.
Therefore, at first I watched the movie with doubts as to whether this pilgrim would really be saved. However, when I looked around, I saw small birds flying around, and I felt like this pilgrim was really going to be saved.
From now on, the sun will rise and the surroundings will change brightly. Although this painting is full of gentleness, the use of colors is not at all appealing to people.
Therefore, it looked like a very plain painting.
However, this painting is full of love, so I feel that it must have brought comfort to many people. I believe that there must have been many people who were saved by those who were suffering in various ways.
It was a work that really felt the love of the author.
